Abstract: This paper is concerned with two-dimensional cross flow past a circular cylinder near a wall. The experimental investigations are based on Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. The experimental principle and devices are introduced, with problems of parameter selection and tracing particle selection being discussed. Behind the cylinder, the dynamic process of vortex formation, development and extinction within sub-critical Reynolds number range are displayed for gap-ratio of 0. 5. The characteristics of vortex shedding in the wakes are analyzed. Under the given experimental condition, it is concluded that the Strouhal number keeps the constant of 0. 2.
