Abstract: Impacts of El Nino/La Nina events on flow discharge are studied with a case of the Yangtze River. The sea surface temperature (SST Index) (three months mean of SST anomalies in the Nino 3. 4 region, 5oN~5oS, 120o~170oW) is correlated with the flow discharge of the Yangtze River at the Datong hydrologic station during the period of 1950~2000. The analysis reveals that the power spectra and auto-correlation curves of SST and the river discharge are similar. Flow discharge was higher during the periods of the La Nina events and lower during the periods of the El Nino events.
