Abstract: The main problems regarding water resources management and ecosystem conservation in a small mountainous region in Europe are presented, together with the selected solution, which tries to integrate river habitat conservation with water consumption needs. Such optimal solution is reached after several theoretical analysis and numerical modeling of the main factors: water demand time series, hydrological modeling, ecological characterizations and water management tools. The selected alternative consists of a combination of measures: pumping water from the coastal basins to a large reservoir during the winter, and back in the dry season; taking profit of daily available flowing and groundwater resources, bearing in mind maintenance discharges; and finally, building some out-of-channel small lagoons in strategically chosen places.
