Abstract: On the basis of analysis on the relationship between mechanism and characteristics of bores, a new formula for computing incipient motion of rock blocks for beach protection under the action of tidal bores was deduced. In the formula, the dynamical action on blocks was expressed with the relative height of tidal bore, and the impact of base water depth on the stability of blocks was considered. An experiment about bore was conducted in a flume so that the stability of blocks under the action of tide bore can be studied. Moreover, the validity of this new formula was proved and the parameter in the formula was determined by using experimental results.
