Abstract: In enclosed bay, water quality may change abruptly because high density outer seawater intrudes into the bay. To investigate the effect of seawater exchange on chlorophyll-a (chl. a) concentration in the bay, time series distribution of water quality were measured in Ohfunato bay in northern part in Japan. During the observation, abrupt change of chl. a concentration was observed although weather did not change clearly. Next, in order to investigate relationship between seawater exchange and chl. a variation, an ecological model was developed in the bay. Results of simulation showed that estimated chl. a concentration agreed with the observed value partially. From these results, it is concluded that seawater exchange is not always only improving but also impair the water quality in inner bay.
