Abstract: Natural water bodies, such as oceans, estuaries and lakes, are density stratified as a result of variations in temperature, salinity, and/or sediment concentration. Past studies on stratified exchange flow over a submerged sill are reviewed, concerning the hydraulic theory, hydrodynamic instabilities at the interface and mixing and entrainment studies. The generation of instabilities at the interface and their effect on mixing and entrainment processes, including the influence of sill geometry and bottom friction on the flow behavior, need to be studied. Results from an experimental study using Particle-Image-Velocimetry (PIV) measurements are presented.
