Regionalization of a Continuous Runoff Model Parameters Based on Basin Physical Characteristics

Abstract: The objectives of this study are to propose a regionalization method for long-term rainfall- runoff analysis on ungauged catchments by using the geographical features of the watershed and attempt to verify the usefulness of the proposed method. The regionalization method presented in this study is the use of multiple regression equation that describes the relationship between the basin physical characteristics and observed stream flows. The model parameters are calibrated on the five multi-purpose dam watersheds in Han and Nakdong River of Korea. The geographic and soil characteristics on all subbasins of the two large watersheds are investigated for regionalization of the model parameters. Maximum soil available water holding capacity, mean slope, basin areas, mean elevation and landuse data are used as indicator variables of parameter regionalization. For evaluation of the regionalization method proposed in this study, Soyang and Chungju dam sites are selected for verification sites under the assumption that these two watersheds are ungauged areas. The statistical and graphical results show that the simulated flows are well agreed with observed ones.
