Abstract: The complexity of wave-structure interactions, involving phenomena such as wave propagation and breaking, run-up and overtopping, suggested in the past that physical modelling should be the only practical way to study the design of coastal defence. However, during the past two decades, numerical investigation allowed the development of new techniques capable of modelling some very complicated free surface flows. Among them, the so-called Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) gridless method seems one of the most attractive because of its simplicity. Herein, a 2-D turbulent SPH code is used to investigate the possibility of simulating wave motion in the vicinity of a breakwater. Modelled results are compared to experiments available in literature.
