Abstract: A Genetic algorithm based methodology for optimal design of water distribution networks (WDNs) under reliability constraints is proposed in which reliability is defined in terms of effective served demands through three parametersnode reliability parameter, volume reliability parameter and network reliability parameter (Gupta and Bhave 1994). Effective served demands under different conditions is obtained using node-flow analysis (Bhave 1981, Gupta and Bhave 1996). The optimization model consists of minimization of network cost with usual constraints along with a constraint to assure proper level of reliability. Only pipe failure conditions are considered. Application of methodology is illustrated with two example networks and cost-reliability curve is obtained to facilitate selection of appropriate design.
