Abstract: River channel bed scour in the Middle Yangtze River downstream the Three Gorges Reservoir in the next 20 years will be a major factor affecting the navigation conditions, which will result in substantial variation of the stage-discharge relationships up and down the river, especially some shallow sections of the channel. This paper presents a numerical simulation of the effectiveness of proposed engineering measures to reduce the intensity of bed scour and to raise water level, by paving the river bed with a layer of cobble-sized rocks in a 63 km long section of the Yangtze River. This model has been validated using field observations, and predictions are made for various engineering schemes to find out the most effective layout for maximum water level rise at Yichang Station near the Gezhouba Dam, where the sufficient water depth at the shiplocks are the main concern of this study.
