Abstract: This study describes velocity measurements in an alpine reservoir conducted by means of a 3-D ultrasonic probe. The reservoir is situated at the foot of a glacier which causes silt inflows of approx. 40, 000 m3 thus affecting the operating system. The load of deposited sediments is currently conveyed by a submersible pump within the reservoir. Reasons are unknown as to why parts of those sediments which have originally been transferred to the shallow section of the basin are later on remobilized and how the removed material is transported back to the gorge section of the reservoir. In order to shed some light on these crucial questions a measurement campaign was performed in 2004 aimed at finding out more details about the reservoir flow situation. Therefore in August 2004 measurements in the basin included velocity and density current probes as well as temperature and conductivity probes.
