Abstract: This study investigates the importance of tailwater depth in predicting and maximizing oxygen transfer at low drop weirs. The experimental work was conducted using a prototype- scale, recirculating hydraulic flume. An enhanced oxygen environment was used to maintain a sufficient DO deficit between saturation and upstream DO concentrations to reduce the uncertainty of the tests. An equation for predicting the oxygen transfer at weirs is developed as a function of jet Froude number, drop height, and tailwater depth. Based on this study, it is concluded that the tailwater depth should be included in oxygen transfer models at weirs, but due to the observed large optimum ranges, designing for optimum tailwater depth to maximize oxygen transfer is not as important as previously thought. Flexible tailwater depth adjustment is recommended to take into account various design conditions.
