Abstract: Taihu Lake is the 3rd largest shallow freshwater lake in China, which is located in the most developed Yangtze Delta area. Due to pollution from sewage and agriculture, the lake suffers serious eutrophication and algal blooms. Great efforts have been taken for the lake restoration. This paper is to analyse the spatial-temporal patterns of the eutrophication in the lake. General aspects of self organisation feature maps (SOFM) are described, and the method is then applied to analyse field data. Some preliminary ideas for further study are also presented for discussion.
