Steady Free Surface Profile of Flows with Air-Core Vortex at Vertical Intake

Abstract: A 1D theoretical model based on the depth-averaged flow equations has been developed to calculate the variation of water depth of flow with air-core vortex at the intake. The use of curvilinear coordinate avoids invalidation of the Kelvin’s theorem in the core of vortex, thus the conservation of circulation can be applied for entire flow. The results of calculation show that the model had the ability in both analyzing the water surface profile and predicting the critical submergence for vertical intake.
