Subsurface Characterization for Hydrogeologic Studies: Hydraulic, Hydrologic, and Geologic Information Collection STEPS

Abstract: An efficient method to characterize three-dimensional (3-D) heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity distribution is developed by combining hydraulic and geophysical techniques. Resistivity survey (dipole-dipole) and inversion are necessary to obtain resistivity distribution and geometry of aquifer. The information of 3-D resistivity distribution can make well location design cost-effective. Hydraulic pumping tests and drawdown data analysis are also essential to collect hydraulic characteristics of an aquifer. Core samples play important role in checking geologic point data and verifying the estimates of resistivity and hydraulic conductivity. The core samples and the relationship between resistivity and aquifer material make us capable of estimating aquifer material distribution from given resistivity distribution. Finally, 3-D heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity distribution can be obtained by combining the results from hydraulic pumping tests analysis, core sample analysis, and aquifer material distribution.
