Abstract: In general, universities have an important role, especially in postgraduate education, as it determines the future direction of a developing nation. For a postgraduate system to be successful, a research friendly-environment as well as good and creative students must be made available. This is also due to the mission statement from the Ministry of Education, Malaysia, which aims to develop a world-class quality education system. This system will realize the full potential of individuals and fulfil the aspiration of the Malaysian nation. The government of Malaysia is committed to the objective of creating Malaysia as a centre for educational and research excellence in the region. As research is seen as one of the strategic priorities for capacity building and is a major function that distinguishes a university from a college, universities in Malaysia are committed to adapting a sustainable research culture. One of the mediums that has been identified to act as a catalyst to boost the research activities in Malaysia is the postgraduate research programme. To light up the current status of this agenda, this paper aims to introduce the postgraduate education and research opportunities available in Malaysia.
