Abstract: In Monsoon Asia, development of urban area with agricultural and industrial activities to support the urbanization has changed the river landscape drastically, and most of people would restore or improve the river environment for the sustainable development with higher quality of life. In the early stage, we had learned very much from western countries, but the characteristics of rivers and ecosystem on them in Monsoon Asia must be quite different from those in western countries. Through the cooperative research of river engineering and ecology, we have learned much about river system composed of morphology, ecosystem and material change in it, which must be applied to river-landscape management. We believe that appropriate management of river landscape brings us various functions of rivers as well as river ecosystem conservation. In this paper, newly accumulated knowledge about river and ecosystem characteristics and its response to human activity that must be the keys for river restoration in Monsoon Asia.
