Abstract: Difference in head slopes remarkably influence the local scour around a spur dike, which is disadvantageous to the stability of the structures. Experiments were carried out to study the impact of head slope on local scour around a spur dike with different head slopes, varying from 0 to 6. A formula of relationship between the maximum depth of a scour hole and head slope is derived from experiment data. The test results indicate that a suitable head slope can prevent the development of the scour hole. Some design principles about head slope to reduce the local scour are suggested for practice engineering.
