Abstract: Because of the gravel backfilling scheme designed to protect the pipeline, the seabed beside the pipeline has been subject to intensive scour. As a result, the pipeline was fractured because it was left suspended over the scour hole. This paper presents results of experimental studies on the case by using both fixed bed and movable bed physical models, which gave accurate simulations of the problem. The stability of sea bed near the old and new pipeline route was studied in the model. The back-filling rate of each trench excavation on the new pipeline route and its effect on topography were also analysized.
