Abstract: In this paper the following aspects are studied: the major sources and their contributions of nitrogen and phosphorus in the Three Gorges reservoir; the temporal and spatial variations of nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations; the relationships between total nitrogen/total phosphorus content and suspended sediment particle diameter; existing forms and activities of nitrogen and phosphorus in the reservoir; nitrogen and phosphorus to be retained by the Yangtze Three Gorges reservoir, etc.
