Abstract: The upper and middle Pearl River basin belongs to the typical karst geomorphologic region in China, where karst is well developed with thin layer of soil, less vegetation and fragile ecological environment. According to the land use and cover change (LUCC) in the period of 1990-2002, the paper analyzes the influence of development and utilization of water and land resources in karst area on the ecological environment of the whole basin and puts forward some suggestions, such as paying great attention to the building of ecological environment, rationally developing water and land resources, transforming steep slope farmlands into forest lands, carrying forward the small watersheds management and further improving the ecological environment of karst geomorphologic region.
