Abstract: Basic characteristics of a river system are the key to know and master the river regime of an alluvial river. The response caused by application of hydroelectric projects follows trending law of river system development. This paper introduces the concept of river entropy. The self-adjusting mechanism and energy dissipating properties of an alluvial river are analyzed in view of system. According to the variation principle, the energy dissipating regular pattern of a river system is inquired. To counter the river disturbance by human activities, the authors also study the relation between river adjustment and river energy dissipation. By analyzing, we find a restricting relation between energy distributing-dissipating properties of river and freedom degree of riverbed adjustment. Therefore, sustainable development of construction and application of hydro-projects must be based on correct understanding of the formation and adaptability of fluvial facies, and we must coordinate project development with a river system.
