Abstract: There exist many run-of-river hydropower plants in the Himalayan region and still have many folds of potential. Varying flow regime and high sediment transport have rendered the challenges in the design of the headworks. There can not be any standard design concept for all projects; every river has its own character and flow pattern to deal with for planning the headworks. This paper is focused on the performance of the headworks in the case of Modi Hydropower Project in Nepal which has varying flow regime and sediment transport. The problems at the headworks of this project have been identified and the modifications have been recommended so that the design flow is assured with proper handling of sediment and flood.
