Abstract: In this paper, the influences of sediment size and sediment gradation on scouring protection at bridge piers are studied by analysis and laboratory experiments. The experiments were conducted with clear water flow. It is found that the ratio of the planform length l b to the equilibrium, or maximum depth h b of local scour hole at bridge piers depends upon the sediment size. It is recommended that the protection layer inclining with the external edge should be below the bed, in order to eliminate re-scouring and protection failure caused by bed forms near the pier.
