Abstract: This paper presents a study of the sedimentation processes in the Sanmenxia Reservoir in response to changes in flow and dam operation. Since 1974 when the controlled release for dam operation began, the pool level has remained almost constant on average, while the flow runoff has decreased dramatically because of water resources development. Under such conditions, the rise of the elevation of Tongguan, which represents the riverbed variation at the backwater zone of the reservoir, has mainly been caused by the reduction of flow runoff and the change of flow pattern, and the variation of pool level has only had a secondary effect. These findings are of importance in finding effective countermeasures for lowering the elevation of Tongguan, and therefore lowering the flood hazard in the lower reaches of the Weihe River.
