Abstract: A physical scale bed-movable model and a quasi-2D numerical morphological model of the Xiaolangdi reservoir were established when the dam was under construction. The present authors establish a set of similarity laws for modeling of high-concentrated flow through a reservoir, and verify them with the data from the Xiaolangdi reservoir and the Sanmenxia reservoir. The established numerical model is designed such that even high-concentrated flow running in complicated geometry conditions could be handled and it is verified with the data measured in the Sanmenxia reservoir on the Yellow River and the Baishan reservoir on the Huaihe River. Both models were run with the design inflow and the operation mode of the Xiaolangdi reservoir for forecast purpose and yielded results close to each other. Analysis of the forecast results shows that density current is a dominant form of sediment transport through the reservoir in the early operation period, the resultant delta-shaped deposition extends downstream, and the deposition in the tributaries is caused by the backwater from the stem river. All these results have been proven in good agreement with the data measured in the reservoir in recent years.
