Assessment of Remote Sensing-Based Hydrological Drought in the Korean Peninsula for Water and Energy Budget Perspectives

Abstract: This study analyzed the remote sensing-based hydrological drought indices, namely, the Energy-based Water Deficit Index (EWDI) and Water Budget-based Drought Index (WBDI) in the Korean peninsula for the period during 2001 to 2014. The EWDI is estimated based on the hydrometeorological variables such as evapotranspiration, soil moisture, solar radiation, and vegetation activity which are derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imageries. The WBDI is estimated based on the water budget variables such as precipitation and evapotranspiration which are derived from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) for precipitation and MODIS for evapotranspiration. The estimated EWDI and WBDI were compared with the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and in-situ runoff data.
