Abstract: The fast rotating propellers of an icebreaker operating in ice-covered waters generate powerful water jets that can effectively wash away the ice blocks in the ship’s wake. In practice, propellerinduced jets can be used e. g. to clear harbours from broken ice or in offshore ice management operations. This work is mainly focused on the propeller wash phenomenon with respect to small pieces of broken ice. Full-scale trials with the icebreaker Oden and an ice mass model towed in the wake were performed in order to investigate the propeller flow effect on the body. The towing force was measured and compared with theoretical hydrodynamic forces on the same body in different flow conditions. The obtained data are intended for phenomenological studies of the propeller wash effect and can also be used for a validation of numerical models.
