Abstract: In this paper we introduce a technique for numerical modelling of ice rubble with freeze bonds using 3D discrete element method (DEM). The freeze bonds are modeled using cohesive elements that bind contacting rigid blocks together. The model allows the freeze bonds to be generated into a rubble pile of blocks having an arbitrary configuration. The blocks are allowed to have arbitrary polyhedral shapes and the geometry of each freeze bond depends on the shape and orientation of each pair of contacting blocks within the rubble. We first introduce the modelling technique and then present some preliminary results from our simulations of punch through experiments to demonstrate our models applicability.
