Abstract: During some deformation scenarios of first-year ridges, such as gouging and interaction with wide structures, the compressibility of ice rubble can be important. An oedometer test is one way of examining the compressive behavior, but the number of experiments performed on the compressibility of rubble ice by use of oedometer is quite limited. A series of oedometer tests were carried out in the NTNU ice laboratory to examine the effects of block size gradation and shape of ice blocks, and in this paper the experimental set-up and preliminary results are presented. The variation of gradation did not seem to have any significant effect on compressibility of ice rubble, but did have a strong effect on initial porosity values of ice rubble mass. Moreover, ice rubble sample composed by rectangular blocks appeared to be more compressible than samples composed by randomly shaped blocks. Results of present study were compared with previously conducted oedometer tests.
