Abstract: Climate change and the reduction of oil and gas reserves are associated with an increase of activities to find new hydrocarbon resources in ice-covered regions. Offshore structures for this purpose have to be designed to withstand the occurrent ice loads. Despite many existing design approaches for global ice pressure on such offshore structures there is rather little information available about local ice pressure and its distribution. For that reason model tests with a physical model of the Norstrømsgrund lighthouse are conducted in the large ice tank of the Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) within the Hydralab IV – HyReS (Hydraulic Response of Structures) research project. The goal of the model tests is to study local ice pressure distribution by using a tactile sensor measurement system applied to the structure. These sensors facilitate to measure local ice pressure detailed with high spatial resolution in model scale. The paper describes the application of the tactile sensor measurement system for model tests in ice, which includes the preparation, installation, calibration and analysis of the measured local ice pressures in a qualitative and quantitative way. In this context the applicability of the measurement system is evaluated.
