Abstract: Field measurements of hydrographic properties and ocean currents were performed from the ice at two stations in the North Greenland Sea when research icebreaker Oden was moored to drifting ice and at several stations in the North-West Barents Sea when RV Lance was moored to drifting ice. Vertical profile of mean water velocity below the ice, kinetic energy of turbulent fluctuations and their spectral characteristics, and Reynolds stresses are analyzed on the collected data. Much higher kinetic energy of turbulent fluctuations was discovered in the Barents Sea in comparison with the Greenland Sea. This finding may influence difference mechanisms of oil spill spreading below ice.
