Abstract: In 2007 and 2008, a multi-group investigation was conducted at Hamburgische SchiffbauVersuchsanstalt GmbH (HSVA). The purpose was to test the capability of laboratory study of the ice growth process in a wave field (Wilkinson et al. 2009). Following that study, a more focused experiment of wave propagation in three types of ice covers was performed on Dec. 12 and 13,2013 again at HSVA. They were: frazil and pancake mixture, pancakes, and fragmented ice floes. Three sets of pressure transducers were installed in the mid-section of the tank. Stop-go tests were performed for five wave frequencies ranging from 0.5 to 1.1Hz. This paper describes the experimental set up. A companion paper (Part II) in this Proceedings provides the preliminary data analysis. From the resulting data analysis the wave speed and amplitude through these ice covers may be obtained. When scaled up to field conditions these results will help provide information needed for parameterizing wave models for the new Arctic conditions.
