Abstract: There is a general agreement on the aspect ratio of the ice-structure contact area being an important factor controlling the magnitude of ice pressure, or more precisely, it has an influence on the ice failure behaviour. In the past, research efforts have been focused on establishing the relationship between ice pressure and aspect ratio with the objective to develop methods for calculation of design ice load, but not on investigating the aspect ratio effect on another important problem: ice-induced vibration. Analysis of a set of model tests data indicates an aspect ratio influence on the ice-induced frequency lock-in vibration. In this paper, the aspect ratio effect is examined to investigate its role in frequency lock-in vibration, along with a discussion on the influence of other contributing factors.
