Abstract: This study looked at the various causes of the breakup of the ice cover during the 2012 ice breakup period in the Saint John River between Grand Falls and Beechwood. The study included a computer model study of the events and analysis of the effects of wind, air temperature, flow discharge, water levels, and ice jams on the progression of the breakup of the ice cover. This study showed that for the Middle Reach of the Saint John River the rate of change of water level was the most significant factor contributing to the breakup of the ice cover.
