Abstract: Due to the global warming effect, the opening period of the Arctic route has been increased so that the number of voyages passing through the sea ice condition has been also increased. Icegoing ships navigating in pack ice will be affected by ship-ice collisions, which can make their control to be more difficult. The most general tests for evaluating ship’s maneuverability are the turning circle and 10/10 zigzag tests. In this study, turning circle and 10/10 zigzag tests are numerically carried out in the various ice concentrations and ice distributions of pack ice. A numerical model which calculates the ice force acting on the ship navigating in pack ice is developed. A discrete element modeling (DEM) calculates forces induced by interactions between ship and ice floes in pack ice. The 3DOF rigid body motion equations of surge, sway, and yaw directions calculate the motions of ship and ice floes. In order to decide the collision response between ship and ice floe in the numerical model, model tests are conducted in towing tank. Numerical results show that the advance, transfer and tactical diameter in turning circle test are decreased with the ice concentration of pack ice. The first overshoot angles in 10/10 zigzag test are quite varied with the ice distribution of pack ice. Ice concentration and ice distribution of pack ice play a significant role in vessel’s maneuverability in pack ice.
