Abstract: Modeling ice covers as viscoelastic continua, a two-layer model was proposed to simulate different ice covers. This study analyzed the physical meaning of each mode in different regimes. It was found that for pure elastic conditions, there are three propagating modes: the gravity surface wave, the elastic-pressure wave, and the elastic-shear wave. These modes were first derived directly from the dispersion relation and then examine the nature of modes for pure viscous and viscoelastic modes. In addition to gravity and shear wave, there exists an interfacial wave and infinite RayleighLamb surface acoustic waves.
