Abstract: Using nature as a model for design is a widely spread principle, obviously also applicable to hydraulic structures. Applying this principle for fishways, river morphology should play a key role as river course, bar formation and bedforms influence hydraulics in a scale perceptible for fish. In German rivers, morphological features are heavily influenced by river correction works carried out during the last centuries. However, from an evolutionary perspective these correction works can be termed as short-term changes, not affecting fish physiology or genetically anchored behavior. The present paper introduces a new concept for the design of nature-oriented fishways basing on historical river morphology. The feasibility of this concept was tested at two sites and compared to a standard design of a nature-oriented fishway.
