Abstract: One of the most urgent problems affecting arid and semi-arid region of China is water shortage. Utilization of flood water resources is an important way of relieving the tension, and the key is to analyze the evolution and transport mechanism of flood events. The river-lake connection project which succeeds in enhancing hydraulic relation of rivers, lakes, reservoirs and wetlands provides strong support for floodwater diversion and storage. MIKE 11 is a one-dimensional hydraulic model and powerful tool for simulating the flood events. In this article, the process of flood routing and diversion and storage was simulated in the connected areas of rivers and lakes, the relevant thresholds were found out and optimization calculation was carried out. Further into the future, information technology will be used to improve the safety and efficiency of flood resources utilization.
