Abstract: The vertical slot fishway (VSF) is a kind of fishway layout form with relatively high efficiency of fish passing, which is widely used in water conservancy projects. The structure of VSF is complicated, and the hydraulic issue in the fishway pool and at the entrance and exit of the fishway has become conspicuous. Thus, there is a need for research on this issue. In order to explore the flow condition characteristics of VSF, an integrated physical model test of fishway in Tugutang hydro-junction is carried out. According to the model test, the principles used in the selection of simulation range and model scale are analyzed. Velocities and flow patterns of the fishway pool and water surface slope are measured under different water levels, and the hydraulic characteristics of VSF have been summarized. After discussion of layout scheme, the methods for improving flow condition at fishway entrance are proposed. Results show that: (1) Because of the considerable influence on flow condition at the entrance of fishway, simulation range of the integrated physical model should include the turbine next to the fishway, in addition to the fishway pool and its entrance and exit. The appropriate range of model scale is from1:20 to 1:40. (2) The layout form of VSF can be suitably applied to large variation situation of water level. (3) Flow condition at the entrance of fishway can be improved by adjusting the operation mode of turbine during fish passing period. The research results can provide references for design and research of other similar fishway works.
