Abstract: The conceptual and methodological frameworks of fish passage research are biased towards relatively largebodied diadromous species (e. g. salmonids), leading to concerns that management decisions to mitigate for fish passage at a barrier may not support population viability for the vast majority of the world’s freshwater fish species. By proposing a set of guiding principles and outlining a broader range of field methods for evaluating effectiveness than typically considered, we hope to stimulate discussion about the aims of fish passage science and management in diverse ecological settings.
