Abstract: In order to reveal the drifting characteristics of fish eggs in natural rivers, 2 runs of field experiments were conducted in the 5km reach in the Ouchi river. 12 fishing boats were rented to sample the particle traces in different positions of the experimental reach. A total 9 million of particle tracers were released into the river and353 tracers were collected back. The results showed that the peak density of fish eggs decreased with increasing drift distance. The densities of tracers in different positions along the cross section of river were significantly different. The density distribution along the river was also demonstrated different patterns. The mean drifting speeds of tracers were slower than the mean flow speeds. The trajectory of tracers was just along the river or in the swing between the left bank and right bank. The tracer release position was found to have significantly effects on the tracer density distributions, mean drift speeds, drift trajectories and drift distances.
