Abstract: Studying wild fish in flowing water is a difficult task and many details of fish behavior remains unknown. The lack of understanding of fish behavior makes design and construction of ecofriendly hydropower a challenging endeavor [1][2]. Regulatory bodies such as the European Commission has launched the LIFE program [3] to push for more actions to improve the ecological potential as to ensure that species and habitat types are maintained and restored to a favorable conservation status throughout their natural range. In order to take the correct measures in a certain river, hydro powerplant or system of basins the possibility to make detailed studies of different species of fish in combination with specific measures such as fish ladders or the intake channels to hydropower plants is necessary and requires new and dedicated experimental resources. For this purpose a new flume tank test facility has been designed by Vattenfall Research and Development and built at the Hydropower laboratory in Alvkarleby, Sweden, with focus on both detailed flow measurements and analysis of fish behavior under full scale conditions. The facility is designed as to have great flexibility in order to support many different types of experiments important for the understanding of fish migration in modified rivers and habitats.
