Abstract: In the past few years, several studies have focused on the interaction between hydrodynamics and the upstream migration of fish. However, there is a lack of knowledge on the effects of hydraulics on downstream migration of fish. In Norway, the problem of mortality associated with the downstream migration is strongly related to demands for efficient hydropower production. The current study aims to analyze the effect of hydraulics on the choice of downstream migration route of Atlantic smolt (Salmo salar) smolts in the proximity of an intake to a hydropower plant (HPP) in Norway. The knowledge acquired in this study is expected to be used in increasing smolt survival past hydropower intakes.
