Abstract: Traditional trash-racks at intakes of hydropower plants can cause fatal damage to wandering fish if they are not efficient to prevent passage of fish into the turbine tunnel. Alternative designs of trash-racks could mitigate these problems. One alternative configuration of potentially fish-friendly trash-rack combined with a downstream bypass was tested in a laboratory flume and was modelled numerically in OpenFOAM to analyze the flow conditions at the upstream side of the rack. The direct comparison of the different approaches is presented as a preliminary research in the recent paper.
