Abstract: Compound defense system for reducing tsunami energy has been investigated by experiments and numerical simulations after the 2011 Great East Japan tsunami. However, the important effect of the reduction of tsunami energy cannot be well represented by a two-dimensional non-liner long wave equation model where static pressure cannot be applied like a flow behind a step. In this study, therefore, a method to include the effect of collision of flow to ground surface just behind the step was proposed and the effect of combination of vegetation and step was investigated. As a result, washed away situation of houses was reproduced well when this effect was included.
