Abstract: Discharge of suspended sediment from upstream is important for the development of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD) by structuring the hydro-geomorphology and ecosystem of the delta. However, the annual sediment budget of the VMD has been significantly reduced since 2002 with a reduction rate of 1.612 Mt/yr during the period of 1993-2015 by using statistical tests. Such reduction is the direct cause of the morphological degradation of delta’s rivers. On average, the riverbed of a target region in the VMD (having an area of 58 km2) had degraded with a mean depth of 1.4 m. This is attributed to a finding of a recent research that river discharges increased but water levels reduced in the dry season of the VMD.
