Abstract: The physical sustainability of the riverine environments in a deltaic country is very much dependent on the balance of water and sediment coming and the way they are managed within the system which is key for the effective management of river bank erosion and flooding. Ensuring the appropriate flow-sediment regime is one of the challenging topic for the sustainable river management in Bangladesh. The primary target of such infrastructures is to provide better livelihood using the precious natural resources (water and sediment) for flood control related problems. However, such anthropogenic interventions have been often proved to be ineffective in the long term basis resulting further devastating flooding, accelerated river bank erosion/local scouring (leading to structure failure) and river bed siltation. In the present paper, an environmental friendly low cost novel approach (bandals) is discussed on the basis of the available results from different research initiatives. The approach can be an adaptive at local socio-economic and environmental condition for river course stabilization towards mitigating erosion/flood disaster.
