Abstract: Coastal region of Bangladesh is frequently hit by cyclone generated storm surge. Apart from human casualties, storm surges cause damage to different coastal infrastructure, for example, to coastal embankment (known locally as polder) and to private and public housing. Damage to polder mainly comes in the form of polder breaching resulting inundation inside the protected land. As polder gives a sense of security to the inhabitants inside the protected land during storm surge events, breaching of polder results both loss of life and damage to property in an ‘unprepared’situation. On the other hand, housing types in Bangladesh coast varies from Jhupri (house constructed from mud, timber and bamboo) to Paka house (house constructed with Reinforced Concrete). During passage of a cyclonic storm surge, propagating surge wave along with cyclone wind exerts thrust force on the coastal structures. When this thrust force exceeds the ‘strength’of these structures (polders and housing), damage to these structures occurs in different degrees. In this study, an integrated methodology is developed that computes and analyzes (1) cyclone wind speed (2) surge depth (3) surge velocity (4) thrust force generated by the momentum of water mass and acceleration of the surge wave due to cyclonic wind (5) stability of coastal polders when a surge wave strikes across the polder and (6) stability of different types of coastal housing due to cyclone wind and thrust of storm surge.
