Abstract: River restoration is implemented multiple rehabilitation actions for the purpose of improving the habitat. However, little is known about changes in the water quality and composition of S-POM in relation to physical changes in the artificial gravel bars. The variability in water quality and POM during downstream transport was investigated in the Trinity river below the Lewiston dam. EC, DO and water temperature gradually increased with downstream, although turbidity and suspended solids was reduced toward downstream sites. Hyporheic exchange across the gravel bars tend to decrease DO, SS, and turbidity. On the other hand, water temperature recovered by passing through into the hyporheic zone. Nitrogen stable isotope ratio on the upwelling zones was higher than the downwelling zones expect for two gravel bars. Carbon stable isotopic ratio of S-POM increased on the upwelling zones except for one gravel bar. These result support that a gravel bar brings a river environmental modified effect and the diversification of trophic sources.
